Internet Marketing Definitions
Here are some important definitions to help
you sort out the jargon of Internet Marketing.
INTERNET
MARKETING (also known as "Online Marketing") - Online
advertising is done exclusively on the web or through
the use of E-mail. This involves the use of the Internet
to disseminate information, communicate with the marketplace,
advertise, promote, sell and/or distribute products
or services. Various types of Online / Internet Marketing
include: website optimization, search engine marketing,
email marketing, pay per click advertising, paid inclusion
advertising, blog promotion, banner or rich media advertising
and online press release marketing.
SEARCH
ENGINE MARKETING (also known as "SEM") - In Internet
marketing, search engine marketing is a set of marketing
methods to increase the visibility of a website
in search engine results pages. These search
results can show up in a variety of places such as text
search, search in directories, shopping portals, social
media and video search.
SEM strategies include:
1. Search Engine Optimization (also
known as "SEO) - Search engine optimization attempts
to improve rankings for relevant keywords in search
results by improving a web site's structure, content,
and relevant backlink count. In 2007, major search engines
include
Google,
Yahoo,
MSN,
and Ask.
Backlinks refer to the other websites or blogs that
link back to a website.
2. Pay per Click advertising (also
known as "PPC") - Pay per click advertising uses
sponsored search engine listings to drive traffic to
a web site. The advertiser bids for search terms, and
the search engine ranks ads based on a competitive auction
as well as other factors. The most popular PPC providers
includes
Google AdWords,
Yahoo Search Marketing and
MSN AdCenter.
3. Paid Inclusion - Paid inclusion
feeds listings into search engines and directories.
This includes comparative shopping sites like
Nextag,
Yahoo Shopping or
PriceGrabber.com or human edited directories such
as Yahoo
Directory,
Best of the
Web or
Gimpsy.com.
4. Social Media Optimization
- Social media optimization promotes by placing ideas
within online communities with the hope that they will
spread virally. Examples of Social media websites include
MySpace,
Facebook,
Squidoo and
Blogger.
5. Video Search Marketing -
Video search marketing attempts to promote a business
by strategically placing short video clips on websites
to be picked up search engine spiders or promoted through
internal rating systems. Examples of Video Search marketing
websites include
You Tube,
Google Video and
Yahoo Video.

collection, analysis and reporting of Internet data
