Search Engines Are Not Equal - Behind User Profiles of the Top 5 Search Engines
[
... about social bookmarking ]
In 2006, Neilson/NetRatings conducted a study for Marketing Sherpa Inc to help determine the
Demographics profiles of people that used search engines. The results provide some food for thought.
What are the Household Income Profile of the Top 5 Search Engine Users?

The income profiles of the user group measured show Google and Yahoo users are somewhat more
affluent than the other search engines users.
What About the Age and "Life-stage" of Search Engine Users?
The results show some differences between the major search engines:

As the graph above illustrates that there are some differences in the age and life-stage of
visitors for each search engine. For example Ask.com has the highest percentage of visitors in
the "Maturing Families" category at 35.4% of their total traffic - with maturing families defined
as any household with children 6 to 12 years of age or any household with children both under
6 and above 13 years old.
What Does this Mean for Website Owners and Marketers?
When optimizing for search engines keep in mind your target market. This study suggests that
the age, life-stage and household income of users is different for each major search engine.
Keep this in mind when optimizing your website for search engine rankings or purchasing pay per
click.
